Ben Riggs is stuck in the perception of the TTRPG community as a set of hermetic systems and intellectual properties. He suggests that 5E was the essential nexus in which creators and players could share, leading to a golden age that is now ending.
I think he’s out of touch. The more these ideas bifurcate, the richer the ‘soup’ that new ideas can be drawn from. Artists should get a chance to show people their work, and see if it has value to others. It’s a medium now, like film or fiction.

I have played D&D since the blue box edition, only missing 4E in my experience with it. It’s been the heart of the hobby, and while I don’t choose to DM games in that extended family of systems, I am still open to being a player. The reason I don’t run D&D is because there are some really great games out there that I prefer, and because I’m always tinkering with home brew systems, not because I think D&D is bad.
But still, Hasbro gonna Hasbro. I’d rather keep browsing, thanks.
