The Ebon March has been inhabited since the Arrival, 30,000 years ago, and also has one of the most extensive jump-1.5 networks in the Array. There was an early jump kingdom in the March, but it never made it out of the bottleneck. Most of that early kingdom disappeared almost 9,000 years ago. For kingdoms in the March, jump-2 and above is fairly new to the sector (less than 2,000 years).
The Ebon March now acts as a buffer zone between three of the Great Kingdoms, and also backs onto the Greater Void. Very dense with humaniti, the March contains all or part of the territory of five small kingdoms, as well as several other inhabited worlds.
There is a Compact presence in much of the Ebon March. A Marshal’s office on Oshukuru acts as a base for that influence. Two unaligned worlds are signatories, with one corporate world and one interstellar jump bridge.
Two of the small kingdoms (rivals Aenon and the Small Entente) have applied for Compact membership, but there has been the usual resistance in the Great Council, as factions negotiate for advantage in the investment opportunities the Ebon March offers.
The Great Kingdoms are careful not to claim territory in the March itself, which might cause the other two powers to align against the one who made such a move.
